Ever since Max hit about 18 months, he has acted as if any act of hygiene is a personal, vicious attack on him. This includes haircuts, trimming of nails, brushing his teeth, washing his hair (but baths are okay), and the vast majority of time, washing his face and hands.
Sure, there are the occasional moments when he will happily wash his hands and brush his teeth of his own accord, but those times are rare. Basically, he is happy to be a dirty little boy with shaggy hair:)
After about the 5th attempt to get his haircut in a salon (which he used to actually hold still for) and several more attempts by Charly's aunt, I resorted to cutting it myself. The shagginess was driving me crazy, and it was almost to the point of getting in his eyes. It was a tedious, 5 day process, and I'm still not done! I had to start by sneaking into his room one night, when he was sleeping, stand on his bathroom stool and trim what I could based on what side he was laying. This took 2 rounds, and of course, it looked horrible in the morning, so Charly had to hold him down so I could at least make him look presentable enough for school that day.
Since then, I will try to do a few snips in the morning, while is at the table and occupied with breakfast. He still hates it, but at least he's not screaming at the first sight of scissors anymore. It's VERY difficult to get anything in the cut front, and it's pretty shaggy and choppy all over since I really had no idea what I was doing and half the time, he was squirming away from me, while swatting his hands and yelling, "No more trim, Mommy!" Good times.
Here's a half-way decent shot I took of his new cut though:
